キューバの画家で父は中国人、母はアフリカ人。サグア・ラ・グランデに生まれ。1923年マドリードに渡り、スペイン内戦では共和国軍に参加する1938年初個展の際、キュビスムの秩序を追いつつ原始的な力を発散させた作品を発表し、ピカソの賞賛を得る。後期シュルレアリズムの代表的な1人となる。1941年キューバに戻り、激情を幻想的形象に具現化した「椅子」や「ジャングル」を制作。その後はフランス・イタリアで過ごす。
